I’ve never talked to anyone. I’m used to handling things on my own. Aren’t people who go to therapy weak?
Not at all. People who ask for help know when they need it and have the ability to reach out. Everyone needs help now and then. You already have some strengths that you’ve used before, that for whatever reason isn’t working right now. Perhaps this problem feels overwhelming and is making it difficult to access your past strengths. In our work together, I’ll help you identify what those strengths are and how to implement them again in what is happening now.
How does it work? What do I have to do in sessions?
- First thing to do is give me a call for a short phone screening. That should only take about 15 minutes. During that time, you will tell me a little about your problem. I’ll also ask about how you plan to pay for services which isn’t a question I like to ask but something I have to do. Then we will set a time for an initial assessment and sessions which will probably be at the same time for 50 minutes on a weekly basis.
- Then there is some paperwork you’ll need to do up front to get some basic information and insurance information. You can download that form the forms tab on this website. If you ask I can email that to you. You can do the forms in person but I cannot start the appointment until they is complete, so I would ask that you come about 20 minutes early. You will need insurance information on hand.
- That first appointment is the initial assessment where you tell me all the relevant background information about your problem. At the end of that session I may have a diagnosis in mind but that may not happen till the following session. If you are seeking services for your child we may do parts of that session together or separately depending on your child’s needs.
- Before the next session I will come up with a treatment plan for you based on what you told me.
- During the second session we will go over the treatment plan to see if you think it fits. We will also get the details on copays figured out. From there the real work begins!
- Most people do one session each week for about 50 minutes or so. The details of how that goes depends on what you need. I think both you and I are both experts in our own way. I think it is important that you come to session prepared with something to work on, but I will have my own input as well to help us keep moving if we need it. Some people prefer to do most of the talking while others prefer I take a more educational approach. It’s all about what fits you.
What’s the difference between talking to you or my best friend or family?
A mental health professional can help you approach your situation in a new way– teach you new skills, gain different perspectives, listen to you without judgment or expectations, and help you listen to yourself. Furthermore, therapy is completely confidential. You won’t have to worry about others “knowing my business.”If your situation provokes a great deal of negative emotion, confiding in a friend or family member creates the risk that once you are feeling better you could start avoiding that person so you aren’t reminded of this difficult time in your life.
Why shouldn’t I just take medication?
Medication alone cannot solve all issues. What medication does is treat the symptoms. Our work together is designed to explore the root of the issue, dig deep into your behavior and teach strategies that can help you accomplish your personal and/or relational goals.
Medication can be effective and is sometimes needed in conjunction with therapy.
How long will it take?
Unfortunately, this is not possible to say in a general FAQs page. Everyone’s circumstances are unique to them and the length of time therapy can take to allow you to accomplish your goals depends on your desire for personal development, your commitment, and the factors that are driving you to seek therapy in the first place.
I want to get the most out of therapy. What can I do to help?
I am so glad you are dedicated to getting the most out of your sessions. Your active participation and dedication is crucial to your success. After all, we only see each other for a session a week. It’s the work you do outside of our sessions that will really help you see your personal growth and development.
